What is Chemprime

Chemprime Before and After Image

Chemprime removes, kills and converts rust to a rust preventative compound, or rust inhibitor. A rusted metal surface that has been properly treated with Chemprime and painted will not fail because of rust bleed through. Chemprime not only removes rust but also removes scales and corrosion from aluminum, galvanize, copper, stainless steel, fiberglass and wood. Chemprime dissolves lime and scales from pipes, evaporators, engine cooling systems, etc. It also bleaches rust stains from wood, vinyl, ceramic, porcelain, grout and many other surfaces.

Chemprime has hundreds of uses and is used everywhere from home to nuclear plants, on bicycles and missiles. If rust or rust stains are a problem, Chemprime is the solution.

One of the most popular of many uses for Chemprime is to control rust and corrosion on automobiles and vehicles caused by salt used to melt snow on roads and streets in cold climate areas. It is an important product for maintaining industrial and manufacturing complexes by keeping corrosion related problems to a minimum.

(Not to be confused with "RUST REFORMER" (Rust Oleum), "NOVOROX", "EXTEND", or "NUTRA RUST". These are all expensive rust inhibitive primers.)

One of the largest causes of paint failure is the application of organic primer and paints over surfaces that contain rust. Unless this surface rust is converted, it will continue to grow under the surface and cause the coating to fail. Any steel surface, whether it is rusty, wire brushed or sandblasted, should be coated with Chemprime for increased coating life. The life of the paint is increased from two (2) to five (5) times. Chemprime is an inorganic compound and produces no organic vapors.

Chemprime reacts with rust or steel to form a chemically inert ceramic-like strontium phosphate film that becomes part of the surface. When primed or coated with conventional coatings, adhesion to the surface is increased because the zinc strontium phosphate film is cellular and actually permits a locking effect at the paint interface rather than ordinary adhesion.

Chemprime, in gallon containers, has been assigned by the US government the national stock number NSN-6850-01-258-1225.

Chemprime for your Car

Use Chemprime as a paint primer on rusted or raw steel. For bodywork, undercarriage, suspension or on the chassis, simply spray Chemprime on the area and let it dry. If you are rebuilding a classic car, building a street rod or dressing up your family sedan, be sure to check in the corners such as inside door panels, on the firewall, in wheel wells, and around headlights and taillights. These areas are prone to trapping moisture and developing rust.

With Chemprime, rust will disappear or be converted to a ceramic like compound. Paint or commercial primer can be applied directly over the treated area. Chemprime will prevent rust bleed through in the future. Always be sure the area is free of dirt, grime and oil before using Chemprime. The Chemprime must be in direct contact with the steel or rust. To insure that Chemprime can convert the rust, use detergent and water to clean the area before applying.

Chemprime is ideal for both "touch-up" and primary painting, any place where corrosion exists. Chemprime reacts with rust or steel to form a chemically inert ceramic-like zinc strontium phosphate film that becomes part of the surface. With Chemprime, paint or primer adhere much better because the zinc strontium phosphate film actually permits a locking effect at the paint interface with the steel rather than ordinary paint adhesion.

Rusty Fender - A Chemprime Demonstration

We picked up a Honda fender at a local salvage yard to demonstrate how Chemprime converts rust to an inert zinc strontium phosphate compound that can be painted over.

The fender had been crunched in an accident so we heated an area and straightened it somewhat and sanded to bare metal. We then let the exposed metal rust. This photo shows the results of that process. You can see that the entire bare metal area is rusted.
We then divided the rusted area by running a strip of blue painter's tape approximately in the middle. We sprayed Chemprime on one side and left the other rusty. The photo to the right shows the Chemprime being sprayed on.
This last photo shows the area after approximately 4 hours. The Chemprime has dried to a hard surface that will keep the rust from reappearing and provide an adhering surface for an auto primer and topcoat.

Also, don't forget to spray Chemprime on the underside of the fender before you paint to keep rust from forming under the paint later.
